vitamin S, first trio

20th Jun 2011 The Wine Cellar
8:30pm Gold coin!
the Vitamin-S pool night was devised as a place where those interested in improvised music and performance could meet, perform, listen to and discuss, and generally interact with all aspects of this complex and largely misunderstood art form. As improvisation is the most widely practised of genres, it may be necessary to define two main forms:

1. Idiomatic improvisation: much the most widely used and concerned with the expression of an idiom - jazz or flamenco for example, and taking its identity and motivation from that idiom.

2. Non-idiomatic improvisation: here other concerns are fundamental. It is usually found in so-called 'free' improvisation.

It is the second of these two forms that Vitamin-S is concerned to promote.

There are four main tentacles by which Vitamin-S explores non-idiomatic improvisation:
1. Random trios.
These trios, usually two per night, are drawn in advance from the Vitamin-S pool. Anyone can join (Go to: 'Join the Pool'). Each trio performs for up to 45 minutes and there are few rules or constraints regarding the direction their improvisation might take, but it's worth noting that this is not a jam night or open mic night. Each improvised piece is a special and unique moment in time that will never be repeated and can only be experienced fully live at a Vitamin-S event.

2. Vitamin-Specials. Each month, pool members are approached to perform either as a soloist or to put together and present a group of their own choosing. They are given sufficient time to 'rehearse' or to work on specific pieces (planned, notated scores or graphic pieces, for example).

3. Organised ensembles, also exploring a defined theme, methodology, direction or approach to a given piece. These ensembles, such as 10 Acre Bloc, are comprised largely, although not exclusively, of pool members and tend to have more of a life outside Vitamin-S . The pieces are usually more structured, although not necessarily in a conventional or obvious sense.

4. Monthly workshops. The second Tuesday of every month). These workshops are run by invited guests and members and are an introduction to the language and methodology of improvisation. This year, we have approached members of the pool asking them to present workshops on a particular theme - extended techniques, 'home-made' instruments (James McCarthy) and dance (Kristian Larsen) for example. In addition, whenever we have performers from other NZ centres or from overseas, we ask them to facilitate workshops for Vitamin-S members. These are always well attended, interesting and nothing if not thought provoking. So far workshops have been run by Anthony Donaldson and Jeff Henderson (Wellington), Susie Ibarra (New York), Eric Boeren (Holland), Manon-Liu Winter, Heinz-Peter Lindshalm/Petra Stump (Vienna), DJ Olive (NY), amongst others. It's an opportunity to work with performers from all styles and experiences and to try out ideas - your own, or those brought in by others. The evening usually starts with an unstructured improvisation, following which ideas and pieces are explored. Bring an open mind, an ability to listen and a gold coin.

You can experience Vitamin S every Monday at the Wine Cellar, St Kevin's Arcade.

And here's a quote to send you on your way:

"Our music is about the inadequacy of traditional imagery and symbols to convey meaning in today's world. By abandoning representationalism we are free to express ourselves with pure form. Specific interpretation gives way to a more visceral response."

Robert Michael Esformes & The Jews Brothers
perform for your entertainment & delight
exotic, soulful, Sephardi-Ladino
Songs and Romances

Robert is descended on his maternal side from the Sephardic Jews of
Istanbul and Salonika. Born in New York, he grew up hearing his mother and grandmother
conversing in Ladino, the language of the love songs and ballads he
now performs.
Robert's exotic music draws from his Ladino heritage and includes old Spanish love songs, ballads and spiritual text settings. He mixes traditional melodies with melodies of his own composition, along with unique musical improvisations. His style is soulful and subtle, and his voice
fluid, warm and entrancing. Robert's CD: "Mystery of the Sabbath," has received
praise-filled reviews -
"Esformes' milk-and-honey voice croons, chants, belts, lilts,
and makes serenades of these jubilant love songs...."

“beautiful subtlety of voice and soul…”

In addition to his concert with the Jews Brothers in Auckland, Robert will be performing in Coromandel, Northland and Wellington.

National Tour with Whirimako Black

5th Nov 2010 - through to Dec 5 Whirimako Black and Nigel Gavin, Chanel Arts Centre, November 9. Reviewed by Alistair Paulin. For the Motueka Music Group, last night's performance was a "let your hair down concert", as the MC put it. The group usually hosts chamber music but its foray into jazz and blues proved wildly popular. Guitarist Nigel Gavin began the night with a solo performance of a new piece, The Tributaries. With both hands working the fretboard, Gavin coaxed intricate filigrees of fingerpicking from his warm-toned six-string, and the crowd was quickly captivated. He was then joined by the soul diva herself, whose first song was Taku Rakau E, from her debut album Hinepukohurangi: Shrouded in the Mist. It was a traditional song from her Tuhoe childhood, she said, "when we had no choice but to listen to our elders". Black's smoky lower register brought depth and sorrow to the song about an elder's feelings of loneliness when all her friends have passed on. She alternated between singing in te reo and English throughout the evening, although when she first switched to English, she confessed that she found it "daunting, because I don't have my beautiful Maori language to hide behind". In addition to jazz standards like Summertime and Cry Me A River, Black reached into more contemporary songbooks, singing Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now as well as songs from Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. Gavin's solos were restrained but playful, and as well as being a musically inspired pairing, the duo had an easy partnership on stage. The warmth and appreciation that flowed between them and the audience grew over the course of the two hours-plus performance until stamping feet called back the pair for an encore.

Over 35 acts on four stages over twelve hours at the Bondi Pavilion will showcase an amazing array of talent featuring Jewish music styles such as Klezmer and Ladino, right through to contemporary blues, jazz, folk, rock, world, reggae, rap and dance all performed by leading Jewish musicians.

There seems to be a festival to suit all tastes. But, as festival director Gary Holzman says, there is one music festival that has been noticeably absent a large-scale Jewish music festival. Thats all about to change!

Ive always found it surprising that Sydneys vibrant Jewish community has, for many years, held successful Jewish film festivals and writers festivals but never an equivalent Jewish music festival, said Holzman.

Sydney has produced Jewish musical talent of international standing including Renee Geyer, Ben Lee, Lior, Monsieur Camembert, Tal Wilkenfeld & even Jimmy Barnes (yes, Jimmy Barnes who knew?). Theres now a new breed of up-and-coming young Jewish performers playing in a vast variety of musical styles; at the same time there has been renewed interest in all forms of Jewish music from Klezmer and Chassidic to Ladino and Israeli. With so much talent and musical activity, it seemed natural to put together a festival to showcase the best of Jewish music and Jewish musical performers to both the Jewish and wider Sydney community, Holzman said.

He explained that Shir means song in Hebrew and madness can mean unrestrained excitement or enthusiasm. There will be an abundance of both at the festival!

Just talk to anyone in Coromandel who has been to a Jews Brothers' concert and they'll tell you how fantastic they are. This eccentric and irreverent five-piece always hits the stage in an explosion of energy and keeps up the pace throughout.
They have a reputation in Coromandel for providing outstanding fun and entertainment and their tours to small centres throughout New Zealand, including Coromandel on several occasions, have given them a cult following. The Jews Brothers Band, featuring Hershal Herscher on accordion, Nigel Gavin on mandolin, Linn Lorkin on lead vocals and melodica, John Ellis on saxophones and percussion and Peter Scott on double bass, is an internationally performing ensemble which travels regularly to Australia and has done four European tours, the most recent being Spain in 2009. Their repertoire combines traditional Eastern-European dance medleys, yiddish schmaltz and gypsy swing with originals in the same vein. Once heard and seen, never forgotten.
The Coromandel Music Society is delighted to announce that the Jews Brothers will be performing in Coromandel on the afternoon of Sunday 21 March. The time and venue (hopefully an outdoor picnic) will be provided in next month's Chronicle, other local papers and on posters around town so note it in your diary now and the details will come later.

Specific interpretation gives way to a more visceral response."

nigel Gavin improv workshop/healdsburg guitar festival

16th Aug 2009 Wells Fargo center for the performing arts Santa Rosa, California
10:30am
In this workshop we will be exploring techniques and skills used for improvisation, using games and exercises in both group and solo settings. Some of the best fun one can have in music is improvising. As a skill that brings ones attention to the present moment, improvisation is a world where childlike simplicity can play alongside full blown virtuosity. From blues changes to abstract sounds, Learning to listen to your inner muse is a must. Improvisational skills can also help one with composing; tapping that same creative vein for later constructions. Above all, improvising is fun! All those who dont think they can do it are encouraged to come along and give it a try. If you can walk and talk you can improvise.

Frank E Evans Dogs Bollix

3rd Feb 2008 dogs bollix, newton, auckland
6pm
Hi to our Frankie Fans.
This is just a little reminder about our Frank E Evans Entertainment Band Reunion Concert at the Dogs Bollix Irish Bar (2 Newton Rd) on February 3rd.
The Concert starts at 4pm with our latest line up which now includes the lovely Linda on Violin and her lovely hubby, Greg, on accordian. We are delighted with the new sound and hope you will be to.
At 5pm the original band will do a set. Arif on Piano and John on Banjo. John will be flown over from Australia at great expense for our party. And Brian on big bass drum will lead the conga as he did in the good old days. And of course Roger, Mike and Peter are all original members also.
At 6pm we will start the ball rolling with a line up of all of the great musicians and singers that have worked with the band since its creation in 1968. Jamie, Hanna, Sheri, Gyles, Diane, Alan, Evan, Farrell, Nigel and Tawera will all be attending.
And from 8pm on we are inviting anyone on stage for a Frank E Evans Jam Session.
Note that these times iffer from our original mailout.
At some time in the evening we have a visit from Tim Shadbolt, Mayor of Invercargill. You can watch him dancing in our video of the Jumping Sundays at Albert Park that we will show.
We are recording this evening for a live Cd and will also video it.
So, if you can only get to see the band once a year, this is definitely the night. 4pm to late. Bring your kids and your folks.
See you there.
If you send this email on to 10 of your friends then you will never be lonely again.
Frank XXX

P.S.
Now you can now watch Frank E. Evans Videos on www.Youtube.com
